Celebrating Wales and Celebrating You and Me

Hello everyone! In our “Celebrating” unit, we have been celebrating those who have inspired us in the world of sports and music in Wales. We looked at the achievements of Josh Tarling, Jess Fishlock, Gareth Bale, Elfyn Evans, Sir Gareth Edwards, Ian Woosnam, Gerwyn Price, Colin Jackson, and Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson.

We also listened to music from Wales. We had a special Cân i Gymru (Song for Wales) competition for Ysgol Sadwrn, and the children were excellent judges. They scored each song individually based on how much they liked it, how easy it was to remember or sing along to the words, and the performance of the singer or band. The artists who ‘competed’ were Tara Bandito performing Rhyl, Gwilym with Fyny ac yn ôl, Yws Gwynedd – Sebona fi, Bwncath performing Barti Ddu, and the famous Eden – Paid a bod Ofn.

The children also learned about key traditional Welsh celebrations – singing calennig on New Year’s Day, Hen Galan on 13 January with the Mari Lwyd, St Dwynwen’s Day on 25 January, and the traditions on 24 and 25 December of making Cyflaith and singing Plygain.

To finish, we celebrated our own achievements and interests, along with our friends at Ysgol Sadwrn, our Welsh language, and everything that makes us proud to be Welsh.
