Even though Gethin and Carys live in Warrington, in the north-west of England, the Welsh language is still an essential part of their daily lives. Gethin, who is in Year 7, and Carys, who is in Year 3, attend Ysgol Sadwrn to keep their Welsh language skills alive.
One of the most important things for them is having opportunities to speak Welsh outside the classroom. Gethin and Carys are lucky to be able to speak Welsh with their mother, and they also have family in Aberystwyth and Pwllheli who help them practice the language. This highlights how vital family support is for maintaining the Welsh language, even when living outside Wales.
Everyone has their heroes, and Gethin and Carys are no exception! For Gethin, Gareth Bale is his hero – perhaps because of his incredible contribution to Welsh football over the years. For Carys, Dafydd Iwan is a star, thanks to her love for the iconic song Yma o Hyd. This shows how different aspects of Welsh culture inspire young people in unique ways.
Welsh Humour! Of course, there’s nothing better than a good joke in Welsh! Here’s one of Gethin and Carys’s favourite: What is always hot in a fridge? Chilli!
With the Welsh language being an essential part of their lives, it’s clear that Gethin and Carys are true Welsh speakers, even though they live across the border!
