Welsh Saturdays: Sioned and Catrin’s Language Journey in England

Living in Cambridge, England, the two sisters Sioned and Catrin have found a special way to stay connected to their Welsh heritage – by attending Ysgol Sadwrn. They are now in Years 6 and 2, and have been attending the school for some time, using the opportunity to strengthen their Welsh and make new friends.

For both of them, learning Welsh isn’t just something fun – it’s an essential way of keeping the language alive. “It’s great,” they say, “to support the language and share it with others.”

The lessons are full of variety and fun: learning new vocabulary, puzzles, reading aloud, and watching video clips. They’ve also had the chance to learn about different cultures, including countries such as Cuba, America, and Slovenia.

The girls have a strong connection to Wales, as they regularly visit family, especially during the summer. “We love this country – the sea, the mountains and the colours!” they say. Their Welsh is kept alive by speaking with family, watching Welsh films, and practising within the local community.

When asked who their Welsh hero or heroine is, Catrin immediately answered: Dona Direidi – because she is independent, colourful, and fun! And when it comes to jokes? “Why is it hard for pirates to play cards? Because someone is standing on the deck!”

With the support of services like Ysgol Sadwrn, Welsh continues to thrive beyond Wales. No matter where you live – with enthusiasm and community, anything is possible.
